CSIA Statement on Chimney Sweeping Logs
The following is the CSIA statement regarding the Chimney Sweeping Log:
The Chimney Safety Institute of America is concerned about products that, when burned, allegedly remove a portion of the creosote from a masonry or metal chimney. We believe that less than complete-as-possible removal of creoso te from a chimney is not adequate. Additionally, we believe that failure to remove fallen creosote from a chimney is also a fire hazard and may cause a blockage of the chimney. At CSIA, we believe that there are three elements necessary to ensure a properly functioning chimney:
1. A complete chimney inspection by a qualified professional;
2. Performance of necessary chimney repairs by a qualified professional and;
3. The mechanical sweeping of the chimney and the removal of substantially all combustible materials (this includes the debris that falls into fireplace smoke shelves, offsets in the chimney and baffles of wood stoves) by a professional chimney sweep is the most complete and competent method.
Please contact the CSIA if you have any additional questions.
